Storm drains serve a significant purpose, especially in areas where large thunderstorms aren’t unheard of. They allow stormwater to flow through which prevents severe flooding, something homeowners should be aware of. Flooding that results from the excess water not being drained is one of the leading causes of lawn and basement flooding. During these floods pesticides and pollutants get drained but if they don’t, the water could remain contaminated. Storm drains are an essential part of water conservation. That’s why this year Empower the Minds participated in the Evesham Township annual storm-drain cleanup program. A 6 person team, headed by ETM’s Director of Operations and Communications Soha Kenjale, ended up cleaning an entire neighborhood’s worth of storm drains in Marlton, NJ. It ended up being 9-10 large trash bags worth of leaves, mud, and litter. Cleaning up these drains is not only good for homeowners but also the environment, and important to the cleanliness of a neighborhood.

A huge thanks should be given to everybody who participated in the clean-up since in total many 30+ storm drains were cleaned out! Hopefully, participation across many towns will increase for this environmentally cautious service to our community. Reach out to your local township and see if there is a clean-up already being hosted, and if there isn’t you can do your part to make a change for the better in your local surroundings.
